When I first had the idea of writing a story about a fictional footballer, I was going to write the story as a sort of autobiography of that fictional character. And I guess I’ve stuck to that format with Offside! and the second part, Playing Offside, which is on the back-burner for a wee while.
With the third part, which I started working on, I followed the same idea. But then I realised a slight flaw with that – Caught Offside brings the story of Shane’s life up to present day. I can’t write the story as a sort of autobiography if is set in the present day. So over the last few weeks, I’ve contemplated re-writing the whole story in the the format I toyed with in the early days of writing Offside! and that was as a sort of diary/journal/blog type tale.
One of the working titles I had for Offside! at the start was “Shane’s World; Diary of a Footballer”. Well, that’s what I’m going to do with the Offside! Novella Series, rewrite it as Shane’s dairy and re-publish it.
Now this may seem like a daft move but after consulting a few friends, they’ve agreed that if I’m not happy with what I’ve done, then I have to do what makes me happy. And that’s to write the story of fictional footballer Shane Henderson as I had initially intended… as his diary.
Offside! will be unpublished at the end of February and re-published in April. Anyone who bought the original will be offered a PDF version of the re-write on request (proof of purchase will be required).
